Cycling in the Oisans

The Oisans region is a cyclist’s paradise — steep valleys, dramatic switchbacks, and some of France’s most spectacular mountain roads. It’s the home of Alpe d’Huez, but also a base for lesser-known gems like the Balcons d’Auris, the Col d’Ornon, Col du Solude and the rides around Bourg d’Oisans and Allemond.

Allemond Lake Loop: Gentle Cycling in the Oisans

Looking for the easiest ride in the Oisans? The Allemond Lake Loop is a gentle 35 km circuit from Bourg-d’Oisans, ideal for beginners or as a warm-up before bigger climbs like Alpe d’Huez or the Col d’Ornon. The route includes Lac du Verney, the EDF dam, a visit to Allemond church, and a short climb to Oz village, and is accessible all year.

The Col d’Ornon – A quiet ride you should respect

One of the easier climbs in the area the Col d’Ornon sits in the valley behind Bourg d’Oisans and should be your go to ride on your first day

The Col du Solude – An untamed hidden epic

The Col du Solude is one of the most remote and unsettling climbs in the French Alps, linking the Oisans to the cliffs above Bourg-d’Oisans via narrow roads, gravel sections, and a pitch-black tunnel carved into the mountainside. Often described as an alternative to Alpe d’Huez, it delivers something very different: isolation, exposure, and a sense of riding deep into the landscape rather than above it. This is a climb for riders who want adventure over comfort and discovery over crowds.
