Pas de la Confession Cycling: Escape the Alpe d’Huez Crowds

If you’re planning to ride in the Oisans and everyone keeps talking about Alpe d’Huez, here’s something most riders overlook.

The Pas de la Confession.

A quieter, north-facing climb above Bourg d’Oisans that gives you spectacular views, steady gradients, and none of the chaos of the famous 21 bends.

In this week’s video, I ride the full loop from Bourg d’Oisans via Allemond, up through Villard Reculas, across the Pas de la Confession, and then descend part of Alpe d’Huez back to the valley.

Total distance: 36 km
Total climbing: 937 metres

It’s achievable, scenic, and ideal for experienced cyclists who want the Oisans experience without feeling overwhelmed.

Why Ride Pas de la Confession?

Many riders search for:

  • Hidden climbs near Alpe d’Huez
  • Quiet climbs in the French Alps
  • Oisans cycling routes
  • Alternatives to Alpe d’Huez

This climb answers all of those.

It’s technically easier than Alpe d’Huez and the Col du Solude, longer than Col d’Ornon, and steady enough to ride at your own rhythm. The north-facing aspect keeps it cooler in hot weather, and traffic is significantly lighter than the major Tour de France roads.

From Villard Reculas onwards, the road narrows and hugs the mountainside. The views open up dramatically across the Oisans valley — Bourg d’Oisans below, Col d’Ornon opposite, and Alpe d’Huez clearly visible across the valley. There are no cafés at the top, no crowds, no fanfare. Just space, silence and perspective.
