Etape du Tour 2026: 7 Mistakes Cyclists Must Avoid
If you’re planning to ride the Etape du Tour 2026, avoiding the most common mistakes could make the difference between finishing strong on Alpe d’Huez — or struggling before the final climb even begins.
After 17 years riding in the Oisans mountains, including Alpe d’Huez, the Col du Galibier, Croix de Fer and Col de Sarenne, I’ve seen the same errors repeated year after year. Many of them are completely avoidable with the right preparation and local knowledge.
This guide breaks down the seven biggest mistakes riders make and how to avoid them.
1. Starting Too Fast With Your Friends
The opening kilometres of the Etape du Tour feel fast and exciting. Riding in a group makes it easy to burn matches early. The first 13km to the Allemond Dam are the only flat section of the entire course — use them to warm up, not race.
Control your pace. Ride your numbers. Save energy for the major climbs later in the day.
2. Climbing Alpe d’Huez Immediately After Arrival
Many riders arrive one or two days before the event and head straight for Alpe d’Huez. It’s iconic — but climbing it cold can leave your legs flat for days.
Instead, warm up on the valley roads or try a steadier climb like the Col d’Ornon. Save your best effort for event day or after proper recovery.
3. Leaving Immediately After the Event
The Oisans region offers some of the best cycling in France. Rushing home the next morning means missing quieter climbs such as the Col de Solude or Pas de la Confession.
Accommodation is often easier to find immediately after the Etape and before the Tour de France arrives. Staying longer allows proper recovery and a more enjoyable experience.
4. Not Dressing Properly for the Early Start
Bourg d’Oisans can be cold before sunrise. If you’re staying in Alpe d’Huez and descending to the start line, temperatures can feel even lower.
Bring removable layers and gloves. It’s better to start slightly warm and shed clothing than begin cold and waste energy trying to warm up.
5. Underestimating Mountain Weather
Blue skies in the valley do not guarantee good weather on the Croix de Fer, Galibier or Sarenne. Even in July, conditions at altitude can be wet, windy and close to freezing.
Carry lightweight waterproofs. Avoid stopping too long at summits. Descend efficiently and regroup at the base of climbs to stay warm and conserve energy.
6. Ignoring the Tunnels and Technical Descents
The tunnels between the Col du Lautaret and the Col de Sarenne are long, dark and often wet. Many accidents happen here due to poor visibility and rider congestion.
Use front and rear lights. Remove sunglasses. Stay alert and predictable. On descents, smooth braking and controlled speed are more important than gaining a few seconds.
7. Staying in the Wrong Location
Many riders book accommodation in Alpe d’Huez. While convenient for the finish, it limits your flexibility.
Basing yourself in Bourg d’Oisans gives you options. If you reach the Col de Sarenne exhausted, you can descend directly back to the valley. If you are staying at altitude, your only option is to continue climbing or wait for the broom wagon.
Finishing in Alpe d’Huez and descending the 21 bends afterwards is far more enjoyable than descending early in the dark before the start.
